Thom Yorke released a re-imagined ‘very 2021’ version of Creep: My thoughts
I’m not going to say I’ve grown up listening to Radiohead, I became cool much later in life. But suffice it to say that I love them. So when Thom Yorke decided to throw a re-imagined remix of the band’s most popular song Creep this afternoon, I didn’t really know how to take it.
This new version is ‘very 2021’ in Thom’s own words and I agree. It’s as if the original has been slowed down, mixed up with new textures, and turned upside down just like this year basically. I have decided I am not going to compare it to the original, because to be honest it’s both completely different except for the words and the basic melody. Even Thom’s voice sounds very different and more in-keeping with their later, more atmospheric works. I have given it just one listen but I guess I’d be listening to it more in order to let it settle in. It’s oddly calming this version to be honest. Really encapsulates a lot of the feelings a lot of us, if not most of us, have had since the last year; a disjointed, sad, and helpless feeling of not knowing what’s going on. Yeah, I guess music can do that. Or rather, Radiohead can do that to you.
