As 5G processors are getting closer to launching in India, with the Mediatek Dimensity 1000 plus coming soon, there is a lot of competition in the market. The major brands like Qualcomm, Mediatek, HiSilicon etc. are always fighting for dominance in the market asd so it is natural for consumers and others to compare these with each other. At the moment, Mediatek’s Dimensity 1000 plus is making all the heads turn in anticipation as its launch with the Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G draws nearer. The Dimesity series have been doing really well globally and therefore, comparisons with the brand’s fiercest competitor, Qualcomm is something to be expected. The Dimensity 800 is often compared to the Snapdragon 786 by a lot of people, but I know who beats whom in this case.

If we are talking about the differences between the Dimensity 800 and the Snapdragon 786, there are a few in terms of their respective specifications and also, most importantly, price. In terms of technical specifications, the Dimensity 800’s CPU cores clock a speed of 4 x 2GHz & 4 x 2GHz, while the Snapdragon 768G’s CPU clocks a speed of 1 x 2.8 & 1 x 2.2 & 6 x 1.8GHz. This shows that the Dimensity 800 has a slight edge over the Snapdragon chipset and even small differences go a long way in real time performances. In terms of GPU the Snapdragon leads by a small difference with a frequency of 750MHz, whereas the Dimensity chipset comes with a GPU frequency of around 650MHz. MediaTek leads the way in terms of the memory capacity with its support for 16GB of max internal memory. The Snapdragon 768G lags behind with support for only 12GB of internal memory. MediaTek is pioneering technology in the mobile market at the moment with its efficient chipsets that are powering billions of devices. With the obvious leaps that the company is making coupled with the consistent effort it puts forth on its technological developments, MediaTek has now also ventured into 5G processors to power smartphones that can run on the 5G network.

Now, let’s come to the biggest difference between these two processors: price. The Snapdragon chipset although hailed as very efficient and fast is a lot more expensive than its MediaTek counterpart. Now, if a processor is really good and efficient pricing isn’t that much of a problem. But the catch here is that the Dimensity 800 is almost the same in terms of performance and providing brilliant features but with much less cost. So, obviously it comes down to the individual whether they would shell out 30–35k for the Snapdragon chipset or be smart and pay just 20–25k for an almost similarly efficient MediaTek chipset.

There has always been an intense competition between MediaTek and Qualcomm in the market. The American corporation Qualcomm came into the market with its Snapdragon processors almost over a year before MediaTek and at that time there had been a complete monopoly of Qualcomm in the mid-range market. Before MediaTek, the budget segment was practically unheard of. In terms of technology, both MediaTek processors as well as the Snapdragon chipsets are very powerful and efficient. But what MediaTek has an edge over, is the price. MediaTek’s progress has been very swift in terms of growth, development and therefore its popularity increased. So, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to state that MediaTek sure has overpowered competitors.
