New launch: Dimensity 700
MediaTek has released yet another new chipset in its steadily increasing Dimensity series of 5G enabled processors. The Taiwanese chipmaker unveiled the Dimensity 700 as the latest 7nm 5G chipset for “mass-market” smartphones at its Executive Virtual Summit 2020 on Tuesday. Only three months before MediaTek launched the Dimensity 720 chipset especially designed for mid-range 5G enabled smartphones and now the brand has launched the more affordably priced successor. Along with the latest Dimensity 700, MediaTek at the event launched two other chipsets for Chromebooks — the MT8195 and the MT8192. The Taiwanese chipmaker also hinted at future plans to bring a new high-end, 5G-supporting system-on-chip (SoC) for smartphones that would be based on 6nm process technology and include ARM Cortex-A78 cores.
Now coming to the details of the Dimensity 700: in terms of build, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC is quite similar to its predecessor the Dimensity 720. The chip includes two high-performance ARM Cortex-A76 cores at a maximum clock speed of 2.2GHz, along with six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. It is also capable of being paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM at a frequency of 2,133MHz and UFS 2.2 two-lane storage, along with up to 1Gbps transfer speeds. The Dimensity 700 SoC includes a slightly inferior Mali-G57 MC2 GPU when compared to the Dimensity 720 SoC that comes with an ARM Mali-G57 MC3 GPU. But it is also acceptable because ultimately the Dimensity 700 is a bit less costly than the Dimensity 720.
The Dimensity 700 SoC supports full-HD+ display with up to 90Hz refresh rate. Looking at other features of the Dimensity 700, the chip is also capable of supporting up to 64-megapixel primary camera sensors, along with artificial intelligence (AI) camera enhancements. The enhancements include AI bokeh as well as AI colour and beauty features. Now coming to its support in terms of connectivity, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC comes with a 5G modem that supports carrier aggregation to deliver up to 2.77Gbps download speeds and seamless handover between two 5G connection areas. One of the highlights that the Dimensity 700 offers is the dual-5G SIM support that will allow users to have two 5G networks on their smartphones simultaneously. The chipset includes MediaTek 5G UltraSave for power efficiency even on 5G networks. This feature is touted to intelligently manage the operating mode of the 5G modem to enhance battery life.
Apart from all these features, the Dimensity 700 also includes multiple voice assistant support. These include Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Baidu DuerOS, among others. The chipset also comes with support for Voice over New Radio (VoNR) services. The brand is aiming to bring the Dimensity 700 SoC to the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2021 and the chip will be powering phones for the mid-range market under under $250 which is around Rs. 18,000
