My FoMO led me to these brilliant foreign films
Since the lockdown started last year I have started watching a lot more movies than I ever did. I have also started to broaden my language spectrum slowly and start watching foreing movies as well. And I am so glad that I did because if I hadn’t I would have missed out on a lot of cultural and creative brilliance. In this blog particularly, I am going to talk about some films today.
I was never keen to watch any foreign language films earlier and the most foreign I allowed was English movies. But after forcing myself to step out of my comfort zone I discovered so many good movies that now occupy very high spots in my list of favourite films. I was introduced to anime as well. And that really made a big difference. Here are some foreign films that I have watched and loved and would highly recommend to everyone reading this.
Flavors of Youth- This is an anime movie set in China and Japan and follows three different stories. There are themes of alienation that every adult who leaves their home and childhood to pursue their dreams feel at least at some point. It’s a beautiful movie and the animation is so realistic you will be charmed.
Poetry- This one is a very underrated Korean gem about an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s who gets an interest in poetry. The cinematography is beautiful and the story is told in such a moving way that you would feel you know the protagonist. It’s a tear-jerker but really worth it.
Based on a True Story- This is a French film and has Eva Green in it so I had to watch it because I really loved her performance in Penny Dreadful. This is a psychological thriller and although it wasn’t Polanski’s best work by a long shot, the movie does have its moments and I loved it for the eerie atmosphere it manages to create.
