My 6 all-time favourite shoegaze/dream pop songs.
Music is a very personal thing. One song can mean something to someone and a completely different thing to someone else. That’s the beauty of any form of art I suppose, it is open to interpretation unless otherwise mentioned, and even then. I listen to a very wide range of genres because genre doesn’t matter to me, if it’s good it’s good. But I have always listened to a lot of dream pop and shoegaze, before I even knew they were a specific category. It was only that the ethereal and dreamlike arrangement of those songs have always appealed to me. I’ll share some of my favourite songs from the dream pop/shoegaze category.
Cherry-coloured Funk by Cocteau Twins- They were a Scottish band and the most unique thing was that in their songs you will never in your life understand what the vocalist is saying unless you read the lyrics. But their melodies are so gorgeous you wouldn’t even mind not understanding. Cherry-coloured Funk and Heaven or Las Vegas are their more popular songs.
Space Song by Beach House- I love Beach House and this song is so dreamy and just so pretty to listen to that you wouldn’t want it to end.
Sometimes by My Bloody Valentine- I think it’s safe to say that real shoegaze only started after MBV’s Loveless. It’s not for everyone so you’ll either hate it to your gut or love it with all your heart. But this song is one of the prettiest sounds I’ve ever heard
Slide Away by The Verve- Most everyone’s heard Bittersweet Symphony by the band but this song is pretty great in its own right too.
One by Mild Orange- I love this song an unhealthy amount. Just the opening riff alone makes me feel like I’m floating or something like that. I know I might be sounding like a total nerd but such a gorgeous tune honestly!
Souvlaki Space Station by Slowdive- So this song I accidentally came across at a friend’s place and I keep going back to it more often than I may care to admit. Listen and know for yourself.
